Dan Dillon knows the name of the 狐狸视频 firefighter who saved the Old Cathedral from destruction during the great riverfront fire of 1849 (Thomas Targee).
He knows which 狐狸视频-born actress had an important role in 鈥淕one with the Wind鈥 (Barbara O鈥橬eil, who played Scarlett鈥檚 mother). He knows which 狐狸视频 County Park is home to bison, elk and deer (Lone Elk Park).
He knows it all, and he put it in a book.
鈥淭he Ultimate 狐狸视频 Trivia Quiz,鈥 which Dillon self-published, contains 1,000 highly localized trivia questions and answers 鈥渢o help you win contests, amaze your friends and bend your brain,鈥 as the book cover puts it.
The winning-contests part is important: 鈥満晔悠 is trivia-night capital of the world, as far as I鈥檓 concerned. I thought it would be a hit with trivia-night players,鈥 Dillon says.

For 15 years or more, Dillon hosted trivia nights for an assortment of fundraisers, which meant writing the questions as well as asking them at the event. It got to be too much work, and he wanted his Saturday nights back, he says.
He still occasionally writes trivia questions for certain groups鈥 fundraisers, including New Year for the Strays, which raises money for pet rescues and adoptions. And he also continues to host a trivia contest at a Clayton bar, which has just five rounds of questions.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 fun and not so time-consuming, and people don鈥檛 yell at me,鈥 he says.
Many of the categories he has written questions for have had a 狐狸视频 connection. The idea for writing the book came from years of writing those questions.
Dillon organized the book in trivia-night format, with 10 questions in each category. He ended up with 100 rounds of 10 questions each.
鈥淚 thought a nice round number would be 1,000 questions,鈥 he says.
It was a decision he came to regret earlier this year when he was having trouble coming up with 100 good categories and 10 good questions in each one.
鈥淎t the beginning of the summer, I was at a point where I was getting frustrated, and I said, 鈥榃hy don鈥檛 I make it two books of 500 questions each?鈥 But it occurred to me that I was calling it 鈥楾he Ultimate [狐狸视频] Trivia Quiz,鈥 and you can鈥檛 have two ultimates. I opted to stay with it until I had 100 different categories finished,鈥 he says.
The first few questions were always easy, but sometimes he had to do extensive research to fill out the categories.
鈥淭here is an art to writing the right combination of questions,鈥 he says.
Many of the questions are easy (鈥淲ho has the slogan 鈥楾he square beyond compare?鈥). Some are a little harder (鈥淲hat allegedly debuted at the Central West End home of Mrs. Julius Walsh in 1917?鈥). And a few you can only answer if you鈥檙e an absolute expert in the field (鈥淗ow many gallons of fuel did Charles Lindbergh carry on the Spirit of 狐狸视频 when he took off for Paris?鈥).
The answers: Imo鈥檚 Pizza, the cocktail party and 450 gallons.
Dillon retired in 2014 from his job as senior writer/producer in the promotions department at KMOV-TV. He wrote and produced the teasers that the newscast uses to entice viewers to continue watching the news after the commercial.
His first book, 鈥淪o, Where鈥檇 You Go to High School? The Baby Boomer Edition鈥 led him to research local schools that he did not know anything about. The experience got him hooked on learning about local history. He now volunteers at the Missouri History Museum.
鈥淚鈥檓 around 狐狸视频 history every single day. I found I really enjoy learning new things about 狐狸视频 and sharing what I know about it,鈥 he says.
He recently gave a talk at the museum about the 1904 World鈥檚 Fair, a topic he says still intrigues people nearly 120 years after the event.
Questions about the fair are sprinkled throughout the book (Was the World鈥檚 Fair Pavilion in Forest Park built for the World鈥檚 Fair? No, it was built five years later), though they are not as frequent as questions about the city鈥檚 favorite subject, the 狐狸视频 Cardinals (What Cardinal was the Most Valuable Player in the 2006 World Series? David Eckstein).
More challenging for Dillon, he says, was coming up with interesting questions about 狐狸视频 during World War II, or streetcars 鈥 an important part of 狐狸视频 history, but they haven鈥檛 been around for 60 years.
It was hard work, he says, but it was in service of making a book that people will want to page through and test their knowledge.
鈥淚 think it will be the best book next to the toilet that you鈥檒l have,鈥 he says. 鈥淭his is not a coffee-table book. This is a sit-down-for-five-minutes book.鈥
