WENTZVILLE — General Motors workers across the country have begun voting on the company’s tentative deal with the United Auto Workers.
Workers in Wentzville will vote on the agreement over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the local union chapter’s website.
Around 4,100 people work at GM’s assembly plant in Wentzville — one of the company’s largest U.S. sites — 3,700 of them represented by UAW Local 2250.
If ratified, the almost 5-year-long contracts would give GM workers general wage increases of at least 25%, plus cost-of-living bumps.
The deal was narrowly rejected by workers at GM’s Flint assembly plant in Michigan — with a 52% “no†vote. But overall, of the workers who have cast votes so far, more have opted in favor of the GM agreement than against, according to a UAW vote tracker.
UAW Local 2250 in Wentzville was on strike longer than any other union chapter in the sprawling walkout of UAW members at GM, Ford and Jeep-maker Stellantis.
Wentzville workers walked off the job and onto the picket lines the night of Sept. 14, when the labor agreement expired, and did not leave until GM reached a tentative deal on Oct. 30, days after similar deals with Ford and Stellantis.
During the last strike in 2019, the GM contract was approved by 57% of members nationwide. In Wentzville it passed by even wider margins, with approval from 64% of production workers and 70% of skilled trades workers.
Keith Doyle explains what the next steps will be for General Motors employees to return back to work.
