U.S. Senate hopeful 鈥 and Marine Corps veteran 鈥斅燣ucas Kunce made it loud and clear last week that he was not going to observe Veterans Day by mincing words or pulling punches.
Kunce, a Democrat, took to social media on Friday to issue a long, scathing statement that took politicians to task for their posturing on Veterans Day.
鈥淚t鈥檚 that time of year again. When a bunch of politicians drape themselves in the American flag and praise those of us who鈥檝e served this great country,鈥 Kunce wrote.
鈥淭his isn鈥檛 a new phenomenon. Politicians, most of whom have never worn the uniform, have always used Veterans Day as a patriotic (male appendage)-measuring contest,鈥 Kunce said, then added, 鈥淚t鈥檚 time we stop letting them get away with it.鈥

(, there were 97 military veterans in the U.S. Congress in January 2023; 72 with the GOP and 25 Democrats. No members of Missouri鈥檚 delegation to Congress are veterans. In Illinois, Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth and GOP U.S. Rep Mike Bost of Murphysboro are veterans.)

Taking the brunt of Kunce鈥檚 blast was U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama, the only politician specifically named by Kunce.
Tuberville was lambasted for blocking numerous high-level service appointments because of his opposition to the military鈥檚 policy on abortion for personnel and spouses.
鈥淚 hope Tommy and all of his enablers in the Senate leave their flags at home and enjoy some nice BBQ and R&R for Veterans Day (while over a million vets are on food stamps),鈥 Kunce concluded.
Concluded Kunce, 鈥淚t obviously doesn鈥檛 mean any more to them than that.鈥
As to Tuberville, he posted this message on Veterans Day: 鈥Today, and every day, we thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice. Happy Veterans Day.鈥
One name not mentioned in Kunce's stricture was that of his likely opponent in the November 2024 general election, incumbent GOP U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley.
