JEFFERSON CITY • For the second time in his short tenure as Missouri’s chief executive, Gov. Mike Parson may be appointing someone to a statewide office .
If Missouri voters elect Republican Josh Hawley to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, Parson will be charged with filling the vacant attorney general post, just as he filled the lieutenant governor’s seat after he took over as governor on June 1.
On Monday, however, Parson and other top GOP officials were staying tight-lipped on any deliberations they might be having over picking someone to serve out the remaining two years of Hawley’s term if he beats Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill.
“The governor is very much focused on ensuring Josh Hawley is successful in the election Tuesday,†Parson spokesman Steele Shippy said.
Parson was on the campaign trail with Hawley and other top Republicans Monday urging voters to back the 38-year-old candidate in a tight race that could determine which party controls the U.S. Senate.

Aides said no decision has been made about the appointment process and there is no short list of potential replacements.
To qualify as the state’s chief legal officer, the attorney general must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of Missouri for one year and be licensed to practice law.
Earlier speculation had former Missouri House Speaker Todd Richardson, an attorney from Poplar Bluff, as a possible pick, but Parson last month appointed Richardson to a $225,000-per-year job overseeing the state’s Medicaid program.
Republican Treasurer Eric Schmitt, a former state senator from Glendale who is in his first term in statewide office, has been active on the campaign trail for Hawley, speaking last week at Hawley events in Chesterfield and La Plata.
He also endorsed a ballot initiative last week to raise the state’s 17-cent per gallon gas tax by 10 cents, which has been championed by Parson as a way to rebuild the state’s roads and bridges.
But Schmitt said Monday he said he’s not lobbying for the appointment.
“I’m focused on getting Josh elected,†Schmitt told the Post-Dispatch.
Republican Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe, who was appointed by Parson to take over his old job, said he’s unaware of any front-runners for the attorney general post.
“I haven’t been involved in any behind-the-scenes conversations. I don’t think the governor would think that’s appropriate anyway,†Kehoe said.
Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, also an attorney, said he doesn’t plan to discuss the opening with Parson.
“That’s up to the governor. I’m not going to tell the governor what to do,†Ashcroft said.
Another name in the mix is ºüÀêÊÓƵ attorney William Corrigan Jr., who ran as a Republican for ºüÀêÊÓƵ county executive in 2010. Corrigan, who works at the Armstrong Teasdale law firm, was among those vying to become U.S. attorney in Missouri’s eastern district last year.
Attorney Bev Randles, who was beaten by Parson in the 2016 Republican primary election for lieutenant governor, also could be considered. A Sikeston native, Randles now practices law in Kansas City. Randles served on the board of the Missouri Club for Growth, a political action committee funded largely by retired ºüÀêÊÓƵ financier Rex Sinquefield.
A potential internal selection could happen with Darrell Moore, a former Greene County prosecutor who is serving as Hawley’s $130,000-per-year deputy attorney general.
If either Schmitt or Ashcroft were chosen, that would open up another statewide office for Parson to fill, potentially leaving four of the five statewide offices filled by someone who was not elected to that particular post during the 2016 election.
Parson, for example, was elected as lieutenant governor, but took over when former Gov. Eric Greitens resigned amid scandal.
He appointed Kehoe as his successor on June 18.
