Veiled Prophet: Symbol of wealth, power and, to some, racism
Since 1878, the Veiled Prophet has visited 狐狸视频, gracing the city's debutantes with a grand ball and parade.
The details have changed over the decades: the ball was once held in the fall, the parade used to be on the day of the party. But the prophet's identity is still kept a secret, and his presence still stirs controversy.
The organization was co-founded by former Confederate officer Alonzo Slayback. The ball met with protests in the 1970s and in recent years as well. It had to move from a city-owned auditorium over allegations of racism. The members of the organization didn't include any black men until 1979.聽
The prophet crowns a queen every year; their last names include Kemper, Busch, Danforth, Schnuck, Schlafly, Chouteau, Cabanne, Niedringhaus, Desloge and other historic 狐狸视频 families.
The Veiled Prophet Organization still holds a parade, and funds Fair 狐狸视频 to celebrate Independence Day.聽

The parade and ball were both televised. The first televised ball was in 1946. In 1950, KSD-TV broadcast the ball to the 175,000 homes in 狐狸视频 that had a TV. 1969 Activists picket the Veiled Prophet Ball
Percy Green of ACTION (Action Council to Improve Opportunities for Negroes) 聽heralds the arrival on Oct. 3, 1969, of the "black veiled prophet" and his queen at Kiel Auditorium, where the annual Veiled Prophet Ball was taking place inside. 1972 Veiled Prophet
During the December 1972 Veiled Prophet Ball, Gena Scott yanked the veil off the Prophet. Scott was protesting with ACTION, a civil rights group. Scott and another white protester, Jane Sauer, entered the ball dressed in formal gowns, then dropped leaflets denouncing the ball to provide distraction as Scott approached the Prophet. The mysterious man was revealed to be Tom K. Smith Jr., a vice president of Monsanto, but the Post-Dispatch and Globe-Democrat didn't print his identity at the time. 1974 Veiled Prophet
The 1974 queen of love and beauty, Susan Smith, is escorted down the aisle by the Veiled Prophet. The ball was held at the Chase Park Plaza Holte, in the Khorassan Room. Since 1936, the ball was at Kiel Auditorium. ACTION, a Civil Rights group, sued the city, which owned the venue, alleging it was condoning racism by allowing the ball to be held there. Black activists picketed the Veiled Prophet Ball, complaining that the organization was racist and elitist. A man dressed as the "Black Veiled Prophet" and his queen joined the protest.
Lily Shelton Baur聽of Ladue was crowned Queen of Love and Beauty on Saturday night at the 135th Veiled Prophet Ball.
Riding upon floats bought from Mardi Gras in New Orleans, members rolled their first parade on Oct. 8, 1878.
Actress and 狐狸视频 native Ellie Kemper issued the apology Monday after critics last week noted she was named queen of the ball in 1999.
鈥淚 should have known better, and I deeply regret and I apologize that my actions hurt others,鈥 she said in a statement.

A front-page story in the Dec. 6, 1973, 狐狸视频 noted a major change in the annual Veiled Prophet Ball tradition.
The "rustic" chapel certainly didn't sound very rough: It had two towers and a Gothic-inspired entrance.
