Granite City steelworkers and union steelworkers around the country will vote Thursday on whether to authorize a strike against U.S. Steel amid contract negotiations.
Collective bargaining contracts expired Sept. 1 but were extended. The contract includes about 1,200 steelworkers in Granite City, according to Dave Dowling, sub-district director for United Steelworkers (USW). Dowling said the last time steelworkers in Granite City voted on whether to authorize a strike was in 1993, when the facility was under different ownership.
U. S. Steel said in a statement this week that the company does not anticipate a strike. “Our plants continue to operate in a safe and orderly fashion,†U.S. Steel spokeswoman Meghan Cox said in a statement Tuesday. “Talks are ongoing, and we continue to work diligently to reach a mutually agreeable conclusion.â€
Prayer vigil is planned for Columbia High School soccer player.
