Long-standing, highly respected Republicans endorsing Democrat Kamala Harris for president are not necessarily aligning with her views. Their endorsements aim to protect their party’s future. It’s not about policy agreement or a desire for her presidency; it’s a strategic move, based on the belief her presidency would be less harmful to the nation and the Republican Party than a return by Donald Trump, which they fear could lead to a dictatorship. (Just read “Project 2025,†the policy plan put together by hundreds of Trump’s former staffers and supporters.) They anticipate a chance to reclaim control in 2028, provided democracy prevails, allowing them time to rebuild post-Trump.
I wonder if there are enough Republicans left with the dignity, intelligence and integrity to form a real conservative party to run against the one that is controlled by a criminal who has no actual commitment to any ideals other than his own benefit. I really hope so. If we don’t have a genuine conservative party, I don’t see what will keep the country from going off the rails to the left.
