COLUMBIA, Mo. — If the Olympics’ opening ceremony didn’t give you enough France-related music for your taste, here’s one more tune to get in your head: Les Misérables’ “One Day More.�

That is, of course, how long is left in the college football offseason. Missouri players report for preseason camp Sunday and will practice for the first time Monday — a day exactly one month before the 2024 season opener against Murray State.

With College Football Playoff hopes in play and plenty of momentum surrounding Mizzou, this preseason has its fair share of storylines to watch. Here are five questions to follow as the Tigers ramp up to the start of the regular season:

Does the offense add wrinkles?

Offensive coordinator Kirby Moore is entering his second year with MU after a debut performance that overhauled key parts of Missouri’s offense. He unlocked Brady Cook’s arm, enjoyed a record-setting season of rushing from Cody Schrader and plenty of tools to play with in a stacked receiving corps.

The passing game is back in its entirety, which seems like the sort of thing that would be mouth-watering for an offensive playcaller and scheme designer. What wrinkles can Moore find for that group this time around?

Wide receiver Luther Burden III will undoubtedly be the focal point — not just for Cook’s reads but for opposing defenses too. Last year’s move to the slot seemed to improve Cook’s ability to access his star, but something more might be required to have Burden open on the regular.

Spring practices didn’t have much to do with scheme, since Mizzou keeps its focus on individual development for those practices. The next few weeks will be Moore’s chance to install new looks, even if they might not be deployed until later in the season.

How does Corey Batoon’s scheme installation go?

Speaking of scheme, new defensive coordinator Corey Batoon will do the bulk of his installation during preseason camp. He and coach Eli Drinkwitz have said it will remain generally similar to former D-coordinator Blake Baker’s 4-2-5 system that prioritized havoc players.

But will any differences emerge? The portions of practice that are open to media are unlikely to reveal these in any significant detail, but there’s plenty of potential for Batoon to put his own twists on what the Tigers know defensively. And with a handful of transfers likely to contribute on the defensive line, at linebacker and in the secondary, at least some of MU’s slate is clean.

Either helping or complicating the process — depending on players’ view and, perhaps, on how a given practice goes — will be the talent in Missouri’s offense. Trying to cover some of the Tigers’ wideouts will present more of a challenge than some opponents will during the season.

Do any freshmen stand out?

Five-star edge rusher Williams Nwaneri demands mention here, even if he won’t demand immediate playing time — or will his readiness indicate otherwise? He, along with a handful of other freshmen who weren’t early enrollees, didn’t participate in spring ball, so this will be some of their first work with the MU program.

How those newcomers stack up physically and against their more experienced peers in individual drills will be telling.

Among the other freshmen to watch is running back Kewan Lacy, who brings track-caliber speed to the backfield. It’s tough to forecast him getting touches over veterans Marcus Carroll and Nate Noel, but he could push Tavorus Jones and Jamal Roberts for spot No. 3.

How and when are competitions solved?

There won’t be a quarterback competition this preseason, but there’s plenty else up for grabs. Defensive tackle, linebacker and punter seem to be among the most open positions, but depth roles at cornerback, defensive end and the offensive line could see battles too.

When the opener rolls around, how many of those battles will be solved? How many need to be?

Last season’s first game, which was against FCS South Dakota, saw Cook and backup Sam Horn each play one half to settle the quarterback competition. Could something similar — albeit with lower stakes and less scrutiny — happen with, say, Mizzou’s punters?

Plenty of depth chart evolution can occur after the season starts, but what’s settled in August will determine which Tigers have the most prominent roles early in the campaign.

Will any big-picture college football topics come up?

Last year, it was a wave of conference realignment that drew Drinkwitz’s scorn during a preseason press conference. That doesn’t seem as likely this time around — but that doesn’t mean there aren’t big-picture things in play.

Teams can use tablets on the sideline now, which is new for this season. They will also be able to communicate directly with one player on the field through in-helmet speakers, like what the NFL uses. And the analysts on staff who were previously not allowed to coach can do so.

None of those changes are particularly surprising. Given how the tablet and helmet communication rules now mimic the NFL, they don’t seem groundbreaking either. But their implementation will be part of preseason camp nonetheless.

Mizzou’s Eli Drinkwitz reins in expectations, stresses work to do. ‘Lot of growth to make.’

Hopes are soaring for Missouri football fans heading into this season, with dreams of the Tigers surging into the playoff field that has been expanded from four teams to 12.

One of the three sportsbooks in the ºüÀêÊÓƵ market already has posted pointspreads on four MU games this season, and some interesting numbers have emerged. Mizzou is favored to beat Southeastern Conference newcomer Oklahoma, but not holdovers Alabama and Texas A&M.

DraftKings (Casino Queen in East ºüÀêÊÓƵ) has the over Oklahoma on Nov. 9, when the Sooners roll onto Faurot Field for the first time in 14 years — since one of the most epic contests in MU football lore.

The schools were in the same league for many decades, whether it be the Big 6, Big 7, Big 8, or Big 12, and have played often — 96 times. But they haven’t met since 2011, the last year MU was in the Big 12 before bolting to the Southeastern Conference. OU has dominated the series, leading 67-24-5, and has won seven of the last eight meetings.

But MU’s lone victory in that recent span remains one of the memorable in program history, as both teams were 6-0 in 2010 when they met in Columbia. The mighty Sooners came in No. 1 in the BCS standings, which at the end of the season determined the two teams that would play for the national title. Mizzou also was unblemished, creating a raucous atmosphere on the Mizzou campus. ESPN’s “College GameDay� show was on hand, broadcasting from that morning from near the Columns, and drew what then was a record crowd that was estimated at 18,000. ABC nationally televised the game that night.

Final: MU 36, OU 27 to spark a wild night in Columbia.

DraftKings also has Mizzou as the favorite, by 9½ points, when it entertains Auburn on Oct. 19. The programs have met just four times, with Auburn winning three of them. The latest was a MU loss on the road in 2022 when multiple miscues late in the contest led to a 17-14 overtime defeat.

On the other hand, DraftKings has Alabama as an 8½-point choice when the Tigers head to Tuscaloosa on Oct. 26 — when the Crimson Tide will be well into their first season without Nick Saban as their coach after he won six national titles in his 17 years leading the team.

The Tigers and Tide haven’t played often, just seven times dating to the 1968 Gator Bowl game that MU won 35-10. Mizzou then prevailed 20-7 in Birmingham on a Monday night nationally televised game on ABC to open the 1975 season. ’Bama has won each meeting since, the last four of which have come since MU joined the Southeastern Conference in 2012. The five consecutive victories the Tide have recorded have been by an average of 25.4 points.

On Oct. 5, three weeks before tusslin’ in Tuscaloosa, MU is at Texas A&M and as of now is a four-point ’dog. Mizzou has a more extensive history with the Aggies than with the Tide, mostly from the days MU and A&M were in the Big 12 Conference. The Aggies lead the series 10-7, but the clubs have met only once since 2014, a game A&M won 35-14 in Columbia three seasons ago.

Playoff push

The betting line on the number of regular-season games MU will win this season is at 9½ (out of 12), after it was set at 6½ last year. The Tigers obliterated that by going 10-2, then adding a victory over Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl that was not included in the betting total.

Oddsmakers have MU hovering right at the playoff cutoff line, and their numbers are all-but unchanged from what they were six weeks ago.

DraftKings had them with the 12th-lowest odds then to make the postseason field then, and that’s where they are now — at +175 both times. (That means a successful $100 bet would return a $175 profit.) They also have been 12th both times at Argosy (casino in Alton), with the payout ticking up from +150 then to +160 early this week to +200 at of Friday. FanDuel (horse track in Collinsville) is holding steady with MU just missing out in 13th place, six weeks again as well as now. The return again would be +180.

Burden’s No. 1

Those who set the prices at one of the area books have Mizzou’s Luther Burden III as the favorite to win the Biletnikoff Award, which is presented to the player who is named college football’s top receiver.

Argosy is the only brick-and-mortar shop in the area to have prices posted on key contenders for the honor, and Burden tops the list at 4-1. Burden, who will be a junior, is coming off a season in which he led the Tigers in receptions (86), receiving yards (1,212) and TD catches (9).

Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka, a grad student, is next at 7-1. He’s followed by two players at 8-1 — Arizona junior Tetairoa McMillan and Miami (Fla.) senior Xavier Restrepo.

If Egbuka makes 78 catches this year, he’ll break K.J. Hill’s Buckeyes record of 201. McMillan led his team with 1,402 receiving yards last year, and Restrepo is coming off a Hurricanes single-season reception record (85).

Egbuka and Restrepo will be working with new quarterbacks this season, and McMillan will be catching passes from a QB he has been with for one season. Burden, meanwhile, will be in his third year lining up outside quarterback Brady Cook.

Cook, meanwhile, is tied with Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard for 11th place on the board in Alton in odds to win the Davey O’Brien Award, which goes the player who best exemplifies “Davey O’Brien’s enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics.� O’Brien, who played at Texas Christian, won the Heisman Trophy in 1938.

Cook is at 22-1. Georgia’s Carson Beck (5-1) and Oregon’s Dillion Gabriel (5½-1) head that list.

If you have been consuming preseason SEC coverage as college football’s kickoff nears, you already know it’s being made quite clear there is a Cody Schrader-sized hole in Missouri’s backfield.

A Tigers offense that entered last season with a lot of questions — quarterback, offensive coordinator, offensive line, etc. — has a lot fewer TBDs coming off an 11-win season that secured quarterback Brady Cook’s role as starter, signaled coordinator Kirby Moore’s arrival as a dynamic SEC play-caller and entrenched Luther Burden III as one of if not the conference’s best receiver.

Great.

But who spearheads the ground game now?

And please don’t say Cook, who can run but needs to be smart with the hits he takes.

Look, I understand why the glossy pages of preseason magazines are fretting. Schrader was a great player and great leader. But this not-so-glossy newspaper print has some advice.

Don’t worry too much about this topic.

There’s one name that should calm concerns. It doesn’t belong to any Mizzou running back. It belongs to the man who coaches all of them.

All veteran Tigers running backs coach Curtis Luper has done since he signed on with Mizzou is recruit talented ball carriers, figure out who among them has earned the chance to lead the rushing attack, then help the star who emerges exceed even the most optimistic expectations.

I don’t expect that trend to stop now, no offense to Schrader.

Luper was an original Eli Drinkwitz staff hire, brought on before Drinkwitz’s first season in 2020. Between then and now, he’s accomplished something that doesn’t get nearly enough national attention. Since 2020, Mizzou has produced three of the SEC’s top 20 single-season rushing performances by a running back. Good, right? The context makes it even more impressive.

Mizzou owns the No. 1 spot on that list, thanks to Schrader’s 1,627-yard domination last season. Mizzou also claims the No. 2 spot on the list, thanks to Tyler Badie’s 1,604-yard total from 2021. That makes Badie and Schrader the only two SEC backs within the past four years to surpass 1,600 rushing yards in a season. And appearing at No. 18 despite the fact the pandemic-impacted 2020 season was limited to 10 games is Larry Rountree III’s 972-yard season at Mizzou.

Mizzou is the only SEC program with three different running backs in the top 20. Georgia didn’t do it. Alabama didn’t do it. Mizzou did.

Here’s another number to know: Schrader’s big season was the 18th in which Luper has helped produce a 1,000-plus-yard rusher in a long career that has included noteworthy stops at places like TCU, Auburn and Oklahoma State. It’s not a coincidence, folks.

“Let’s make it look easy,� Luper told me during a conversation this offseason. “And keep doing it.�

Slowly but surely, word has spread that Mizzou is a great place for running backs who aren’t afraid to compete. Schrader went from Division II transfer and Mizzou walk-on to finishing in the top 10 of Heisman Trophy voting. He answered the concerns about who would replace Badie, just like Badie answered the concerns about who would replace Rountree. Now, it’s someone else’s turn, and the talent jostling to become the next answer keeps improving under Luper’s careful watch.

Mizzou’s growing status as a running back destination helped Drinkwitz and Luper land four-star freshman Kewan Lacy out of Texas, where he was once clocked running a 10.4 second 100-meter dash. Hungry veteran transfers like Marcus Carroll (Georgia State) and Nate Noel (Appalachian State) arrive eager to prove they can, like Schrader, make the SEC jump.

Carroll ran for 1,350 yards and 13 touchdowns last season and will impose a punishing 5-foot-10, 220-pound frame on tacklers. Noel ran outside zone at App State, a style very similar to Mizzou’s.

Returning Tigers should not be overlooked, either. St. Mary’s standout Jamal Roberts and Tavorus Jones will get their shots.

Expect to see multiple backs early. If someone runs away with it, Luper will be more than happy to let him run.

Remember, he didn’t have a sure thing at running back at this point last season. Schrader was an option, not the star. Now some are wondering if Mizzou can rebound from Schrader’s departure. Same question was asked about Badie. And Rountree.

As long as Luper is at Mizzou — and Drinkwitz must continue to make sure Luper is at Mizzou — I’ll press pause on fretting too much.

Eli ±á´Ç´Ú´Ú:ÌýHowdy all, and happy Thursday. Preseason camp is just a few days away. In less than a month, there will be actual (Week Zero) college football games to talk about. It's almost here... But in the meantime, I'll take your questions, comments and whatever else you've got for the next couple of hours.

³¢°ä:ÌýWhat record will it take to make the playoff? 10-2? Will 9-3 have a chance? How many SEC teams and how many Little Ten teams would you project in the 11 spots?

±á´Ç´Ú´Ú:ÌýFor Mizzou specifically, 10-2. That should be pretty safe in a vacuum for an SEC team, but MU could be a bit of an exception. There's no secret that Missouri's schedule is as favorable as an SEC slate can be. If those losses are, say, Alabama and Texas A&M, that seems understandable, but then the resume is probably not super strong. Oklahoma at home would be the best win. Not many of the other games on the schedule are going to move the needle. If there are a handful of 10-2 teams, that could bump Mizzou from the bubble — but I think it's still probably enough. 11-1 is obviously in. The same scheduling point goes for 9-3 with this season. I don't see how any wins could make a strong enough resume to compensate for three losses to this schedule.

If you look at the 12-team playoff, at least three spots are off the table: one to the G5 representative, one to the Big 12 champ, one to the ACC champ. The SEC and Big Ten will be cheering for the highest ranked B12/ACC teams to win their championship games because then those conferences only have one representative each. But if a 20th-ranked team beats a 7th-ranked team in one of those title games, that conference probably gets two teams in and that messes with what the two powerhouse leagues want.

That makes me think there will be eight, maybe nine spots available for the SEC and Big Ten. It probably goes to four apiece and if it's nine, five to whichever fifth-place team the committee likes more. It's tough to see one conference getting half (six) of the CFP field, but I guess possible. Still, I'm sticking with thinking 4-5 for each of those two leagues.

Tiger Boz:ÌýIf the media is correct and Missouri finishes six in the SEC standings I don't see a path to the playoffs? Also, if the team does better than that and is in the conversation for a playoff berth might the "soft" schedule potentially hurt them if other teams have same record?

±á´Ç´Ú´Ú:ÌýExactly. The schedule is an advantage if Missouri uses it to go a calm 10-2 or 11-1. In any other scenario, it's probably what keeps the Tigers out. It's a softer end to the schedule in particular, so it's not like there's room for a statement win near the time the committee will be crafting its 12-team field. There's probably an argument that MU would benefit from blowing out its early season games to show that it didn't just beat the teams in front of it but dominated them. Then the Tigers can argue that they got the best possible results from the schedule given to them by the SEC.

It's tough to see the SEC (or Big Ten) getting six teams in. That would mean the other of those two conferences only gets three.

And that's why the TBD SEC tiebreakers are so vital to Missouri. The only team in the projected top six that Mizzou plays is Alabama. There's no opportunity for head-to-head tiebreaker position against Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, LSU or Tennessee this year. There's going to be some real confusion looking at the standings as the year goes on and figuring out the implications. Wouldn't shock me if the last SEC spot in the CFP is determined by whichever tiebreaker separates fourth from fifth from sixth in the standings.

TigerBoz:ÌýHow big is the game at Texas A&M?

±á´Ç´Ú´Ú:ÌýVery. It might be the difference between 11-1 and 10-2, which might be the difference between a home playoff game and sweating selection to then go play on the road somewhere. It's too early to know that for sure, of course, but it's also easy to see a scenario in which that's the case. Taking CFP implications out of it, that'll be this team's first road game. Last year, it was a little bit gentler road escalation: first a "home" game in ºüÀêÊÓƵ, then Vanderbilt, then more typical SEC atmospheres. You're ripping the band-aid off by going straightaway to Kyle Field. That game should be this team's first real test of the season.

°Õ¾±²µ²µ²µ±ð°ù¹ó²¹²Ô:ÌýEli: Who’s replacing the thicker kicker this year and what is his background?

±á´Ç´Ú´Ú:ÌýBlake Craig will step in as the kicker. I'll write more about him during preseason camp, but he was around for last year as a redshirt. He handled the kickoffs during a few games that the team didn't feel like Mevis was prepared for. As a high school prospect, Craig was ranked the No. 2 kicker in his class, so he has the good billing. I've seen a practice clip out there of him hitting from, uh, Mevis range...Ìý

°Õ³ó±ð±Ê²¹²õ³Ù´Ç°ù:ÌýThe Tiger's offense looks strong, even with new running backs. But how about the defense? How is this year's defense expected to compare to last year's defense?

Hoff:ÌýI was talking about this on the radio with a station in Birmingham this morning. From a personnel level, quite different. There will be a new DE, DT, two new CBs, a new S and maybe a new LB as well — plus more newcomers in the rotational spots as well. In terms of talent, it might be tough to evaluate at first. It's not like Murray State or Buffalo will (or should) test a defense much. Maybe Boston College has some wrinkles, but same there. Vanderbilt is Vanderbilt. There are fair questions about what this defense can be, but I don't know if any real answers will emerge until the Texas A&M.

°Õ¾±²µ²µ±ð°ù´Ú²¹²Ô:ÌýThoughts on Johnnie Walker? Surprised he didn’t receive more pre-season accolades!

±á´Ç´Ú´Ú:ÌýJohnny Walker was the Cotton Bowl MVP, so there was that, but I think he was largely overshadowed by Darius Robinson last year. That shouldn't be the case this time around. That said, Walker wasn't even on the ballot for preseason All-SEC. So in that particular case, it's not that people didn't vote for him — it's that they couldn't.

J.L. from STL:ÌýCurious to hear your evaluation of Marques Johnson, Mekki Miller and Joshua Manning and if you see one of them stepping up and pushing for more playing time.

Hoff: I'll be keeping an eye on all three during camp. For Marquis Johnson, the speed is obviously there at a very high level. But what else can he add to the route tree that gives him more looks beyond just gos. Mekhi Miller had his moments but also had some injuries last year. Consistency is probably the key for him. And there just hasn't been a big sample of Joshua Manning in games yet. If and when those looks come, what does he do with them? Opportunities will be scarce so little things will be a big deal. The question for all three, of course, is what they can bring that Luther Burden, Theo Wease and Mookie Cooper don't — or why they should be the ones to play in the occasional four-WR set or when one of the main three sits out a play.

TigerBoz: The team stayed relatively healthy last season and reaped the benefits. Whom on both sides of the ball can they least afford to lose for any period of time? Despite the obvious talents of Burden, it's Cook for me on offense and I'll take suggestions on defense.

Hoff: Agreed on Cook. You could also point to the offensive line. All five starters were healthy for every single game last year. How often does that happen in any level of football? Defensively, it's probably about what positions are thinnest. There are only so many viable DTs on the roster, so losing someone like Kristian Williams probably hurts that. Cornerback will also be a bit thin, so losing Drey Norwood or Toriano Pride would hurt there. Maybe a high-end playmaker will emerge during camp that changes the math on defense, but for now I think it's about depth.

²Ñ²¹°ù°ì:ÌýA number of SEC schools recently canceled non-conference games to get to three non-conference games in their future schedules. (Prepping for a 9-game SEC season perhaps?). Mizzou has 4 non-conference games booked for most seasons heading into the 2030’s. If they need to cut some off the schedule, who may be most likely?

±á´Ç´Ú´Ú:ÌýI don't think this is the answer most people want to hear, but it's the power conference opponents — like Kansas — that would seemingly be at risk. (Unless they're still required to have one of those in noncon play even with 9 SEC games, of course.) Why play a school like that when you could get Middle Tennessee or Buffalo or Central Michigan? Now, the optics of either Mizzou or KU pulling out of that series could be a hold-up, or maybe they both want to make it happen. That's just where in a big picture sense I'd guess programs make cuts to future schedules.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — There’s a fairly frequent drill that the Missouri football team goes through during workouts at Memorial Stadium: running the stairs. The Tigers climb from the field level up toward the concourse in the name of conditioning.

But next week, a different kind of climb begins.

Mizzou will open its preseason camp on Monday, practicing in “fall� — high temperatures are forecast to be in the upper 90s next week, so it’s decidedly still summer — for the first time.

Within some portions of the roster, that means there’s an opportunity for players to climb the depth chart ladder.

Last season, one of those opportunities was at quarterback, but Brady Cook cleared the field there. Headed into the 2024 preseason, MU’s most impactful position battles are more in the nitty-gritty parts of the game. Here are three to keep an eye on as camp unfolds:

Linebacker

Technically, the Tigers’ linebacker corps lost both starters from last season, though Chad Bailey and Ty’Ron Hopper both missed significant portions of the campaign with injuries. That pushed Chuck Hicks and Triston Newson into bigger roles, which both will look to reprise this time around.

They are veteran presences in their final years of college football, but starter status is not a guarantee.

Corey Flagg Jr., who transferred from Miami, seems likely to provide the biggest push to Hicks and Newson — more likely the latter as the “will� or weak-side linebacker. Flagg has played double-digit games each of the past three seasons, so he has experience. His ability to roam around the defense as a blitzer could be an intriguing element to the Tigers’ evolving scheme.

Khalil Jacobs will be another of the primary challengers. He transferred to Missouri from South Alabama, following new defensive coordinator Corey Batoon from his past stop to his new stomping grounds.

Other names to watch in the heart of the defense are second-year player Brayshawn Littlejohn, who played well in his limited special teams looks before redshirting, and Jeremiah Beasley, who transferred from Michigan. At face value, both seem too inexperienced to be in contention for a starting spot, but preseason camp could lay the groundwork for them to find contributing roles later this season.

Defensive tackle

At defensive tackle, a starting role is mostly nominal. The Tigers rolled with a four-man rotation on the interior of the defensive line, so something similar is likely to stay in place.

Kristian Williams is the only member of last year’s rotation to be back this season. That likely leaves three spots up for grabs.

Chris McClellan and Sterling Webb both entered the fray out of the transfer portal, coming from Florida and New Mexico State respectively. They each appeared in 25 games across their first two seasons of college football, bringing a degree of experience to MU.

With McClellan’s appearances coming against Southeastern Conference competition, he seems more inclined to start alongside Williams, though he only made one start with the Gators. Webb, a Westminster product, could lead the chase group.

Who becomes the fourth defensive tackle seems much more up in the air. Marquis Gracial, a third-year player whose high school ball came at St. Charles, appeared just twice last season. Jalen Marshall, who’s in the same class, played in one game. Second-year player Sam Williams didn’t step onto the field in any games last season.

And then there are three freshmen — Elias Williams, Justin Bodford and Jadon Frick — who are listed as defensive tackles, though rising to the SEC’s level of physicality in the trenches is a tough task for such young players.

The influx of newcomers and younger players who will ultimately end up taking snaps at defensive tackle makes this position battle less about internal competition and more about stacking up competently against eventual opponents — the question with this group is more about whether Mizzou can get four of these players to be serviceable rotation pieces once the season starts.

Punter

Is this one glamorous? Not at all, but it’s a battle that went unresolved throughout the 2023 season.

Coach Eli Drinkwitz didn’t seem satisfied with his punter options during last preseason camp, and that lingered throughout the regular season too.

Riley Williams, who departed MU over the offseason, was the punter for the first three games. Then Luke Bauer stepped in for the fourth through 10th games, only for Williams to reprise his role in the final three games of the season, save for one Bauer punt in the regular-season finale.

If that sounds a little wishy-washy, it’s because it is.

Bauer will once again face an Australian competitor for the job — this time in the form of Murray State transfer Orion Phillips.

They dueled during spring ball, though that didn’t seem to settle things. A windy spring game made it difficult to evaluate them, though Bauer did average more yards per punt in that affair. The Tigers are likely to chase consistency with their eventual punter pick, making the entire volume of preseason camp a basis for determining the specialist of choice.

Other positions that could see competition are running back, where a committee approach is likely, and offensive line, where the Missouri coaching staff has yet to figure out its best combination of players.
