Injury report
Lance Lynn (knee strain): Veteran right-hander had been pitching through stiffness in his right knee, and he even experienced a decline in velocity to begin a recent start until getting the knee to cooperate. Lynn played catch on Monday after going through a three-day period of inactivity to allow him to rest the knee. He is expected to go through a throwing progression before he returns from the 15-day injured list. Updated August 5
Riley O'Brien (flexor tendon): O’Brien completed one scoreless inning and struck out two batters on 11 pitches with Memphis on Sunday in what was the second of back-to-back outings. O’Brien, who had been hovering between 94 mph and 97 mph with his fastball, touched 97.1 mph on Sunday. It was the first time during his rehab that O’Brien threw on back-to-back days and he reportedly came out of Sunday’s appearance “good,” Marmol said. O’Brien is expected to play catch on Tuesday in Memphis to see how he recovers from the back-to-back outings before determining his next step as his rehab could shift to a health decision to a performance decision. Steven Matz (lower back stiffness): He will throw three innings (or about 50 pitches) for Memphis on Tuesday. Began his rehab assignment officially Thursday night with Class AAA Memphis and struck out two batters in two innings. The only run he allowed came on a solo homer, which was also the only hit he allowed. The Cardinals received positive reviews from the lefty on how he recovered Friday morning, and he will continue to go through his rehab assignment building arm strength and preparing to start. Michael Siani (oblique strain): Siani was set to receive additional testing on Monday, per Marmol. That information, which was not available before Monday's game, will guide his timetable for a return. The club is expecting his absence to be at least three weeks to a month, and it could be longer depending on how he responds to treatment and heals. Oblique injuries vary by person. He has been prescribed rest with limited activities in the next week. Updated August 5
