The Cardinals begin their second home series of the year Monday against the Phillies. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m.
Right-hander Miles Mikolas (1-1, 6.10) will take the mound for the Cardinals. After a rough debut vs. the Dodgers. Mikolas recorded a quality start vs. the Padres in his second outing (six innings, two earned runs).
After that game, Mikolas said his path to success involved taking advantage of his defense and pitching to contact.
The Phillies will counter with right-hander Spencer Turnbull (1-0, 0.00), who's in his first year in the National League after starting his career with Detroit.
Turnbull went 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs last May in his lone career start vs. the Cardinals. He made seven starts combined over the past two seasons due to injuries.

Injury report
Willson Contreras (bruised hand):Cardinals are going day to day with the decision on when Contreras will return from a deep bone bruise on the back of his left hand. He was able to hit without persisting discomfort Monday during batting practice. He is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday to catch Sonny Gray, and then could appear at DH on Wednesday before an off day Thursday. The catcher took a pitch off the back of his hand this past Wednesday in San Diego and was concerned that the swelling and tenderness would limit his ability to catch and frame pitches. Updated April 8
Tommy Edman (wrist surgery):On the 10-day IL, Edman received clearance to restart a swing program. He will start with dry swings and then hitting off the tee before advancing to soft toss and then coach pitch and machine pitch. This could be a lengthy return and the Cardinals and Edman will do it cautiously because of the setbacks he experienced during spring training. Edman had wrist surgery in October, but during spring training was unable to get deep into the hitting program because of recurring discomfort in the surgically repaired left wrist.Updated April 8
Matt Carpenter (oblique strain):Placed on the 10-day injured list ahead of the home opener, veteran infielder and designated hitter felt discomfort in his torso Wednesday morning in San Diego after he went through his pregame routine in the batting cage. He did not appear in the lineup for the series finale against the Padres so that allowed the Cardinals to backdate his IL assignment to Tuesday. Updated April 8
Sonny Gray (hamstring): On the 15-day injured list, Gray will start Tuesday's game vs. the Phillies and be on a pitch count of about 65 pitches. He convinced the team he was game-ready despite not appearing in an official game since the first week of March when he sustained a "mild" tear his right hamstring. The team's original plan was to have Gray make a rehab start Tuesday for Class AAA Memphis. He threw his typical between starts bullpen session on Saturday. He threw 54 pitches in the game at Springfield, Missouri, and got into what would be a fourth inning of work. Updated April 8
Riley O'Brien (flexor tendon):Placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday morning, O'Brien's right arm tightened up after his opening day appearance. Scans taken of O'Brien's elbow and forearm in Ƶ did not initially show any structural damage, team official said. The Cardinals initial diagnosis is strain of the flexor tendon. The right-hander has begun a treatment plan.Updated April 8
Lars Nootbaar (fractured ribs): On the 10-day IL, Nootbaar will return to Class AA Springfield to play nine innings in the field Tuesday as his rehab assignment resumes. He was able to go through a battery of exams Monday in Ƶ and test a protective shirt that covers his injured ribs. The Cardinals have said the decision on when Nootbaar rejoins the active roster is a baseball decision now, not a medical decision. He's working on the timing and feel at the plate that he did not have the time in spring training to accomplish. The expectation is for Nootbaar to rejoin the lineup Friday in Arizona.Updated April 8
Dylan Carlson (sprained shoulder): On 10-day IL, Carlson returned to Ƶ and received a platelet-rich plasma injection to encourage healing in his separated shoulder. As of Monday, he has been cleared to begin strengthening exercises, but he is still limited when it comes to baseball activities. He is expected to miss between four and six weeks. He's set to have a follow-up appointment with a doctor on Monday.Updated April 8
Keynan Middleton (forearm strain): On the 15-day IL, Middleton received a PRP injection to facilitate healing. That required a 72-hour period of inactivity. Once clear of that he will slowly begin a throwing program that could put him several weeks away from returning to the mound for any workouts that would be similar to a bullpen session.Updated April 8
Drew Rom (biceps tendinitis): On the 15-day IL, Rom experienced the soreness in his left arm shortly before the end of spring training. He was able to resume playing catch and throwing at a distance before the team left Florida. He’ll be on a throwing program to rebuild arm strength and ready for a likely assignment to Class AAA Memphis’ rotation.Updated April 8
