The baseball community has lost a four-legged friend.
Keith Hernandez’s fan-favorite cat, Hadji, died at age 22, the former first baseman Wednesday.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I must tell you that I had to put Hadji down last week,†Hernandez wrote on X. “It was his time to go. I loved him so much and miss him dearly.â€
A Bengal cat with distinctive stripes, Hadji earned a viral following on social media in 2018 as Hernandez shared feel-good videos featuring the feline.
Hadji was named after a character on the 1960s animated series “Jonny Quest.â€
“My old buddy. See you in another life,†Hernandez wrote Wednesday , this one including a photo of him holding the cat. “I know you’ll be waiting for me with open paws.â€

Hernandez’s videos with Hadji offered another glimpse into the life of a popular former player who won the 1986 World Series with the Mets, delivered a memorable cameo on “Seinfeld†and is now an analyst on SNY’s Mets game broadcasts.
Hernandez, 71, spent seven seasons with the Mets from 1983-89. He also played with the Cardinals and Cleveland during his 17-year MLB career and finished with a .296 average, 1,071 RBI, five All-Star selections and 11 Gold Glove Awards.
Hadji helped Hernandez’s social-media following skyrocket, and Hernandez regularly referenced Hadji on SNY broadcasts.
The cat became such a revelation that a fan and held it in the stands.
“It was his time to go,†Hernandez Wednesday. “No quality of life. He passed painlessly and with dignity. Tough one. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it.â€
